چکیده

When scanning weakly attenuating samples using an X-ray tube with a very small focal spot size, the acquired projections not only contain absorption contrast, but also phase contrast due to refraction of the X-rays. Although the resulting edge enhancement can be beneficial in radiography, the tomographic reconstruction of such mixed projections using a conventional algorithm yields cross-sections that are severely distorted by so-called phase contrast artefacts.

Experimental Realisation of High-sensitivity Laboratory X-ray Grating-based Phase-contrast Computed Tomography

The possibility to perform high-sensitivity X-ray phase-contrast imaging with laboratory grating-based phase-contrast computed tomography (gbPC-CT) setups is of great interest for a broad range of high-resolution biomedical applications. However, achieving high sensitivity with laboratory gbPC-CT setups still poses a challenge because several factors such as the reduced flux, the polychromatici...

Translation of Atherosclerotic Plaque Phase-Contrast CT Imaging from Synchrotron Radiation to a Conventional Lab-Based X-Ray Source

OBJECTIVES Phase-contrast imaging is a novel X-ray based technique that provides enhanced soft tissue contrast. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of visualizing human carotid arteries by grating-based phase-contrast tomography (PC-CT) at two different experimental set-ups: (i) applying synchrotron radiation and (ii) using a conventional X-ray tube. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fi...

Advanced X-ray computed tomography methods: High resolution CT, quantitative CT, 4DCT and phase contrast CT

During the last years, a number of novel X-ray imaging and data processing methods have been developed. This work gives an overview of some recent CT-developments: 1) High resolution CT: State of the art laboratory CT-systems are able to reach resolutions down to 0.7 μm (or even lower) and voxels sizes down to 50 nm. Several applications of high-resolution CT are presented and discussed. 2) Qua...

Helical X-ray phase-contrast computed tomography without phase stepping

X-ray phase-contrast computed tomography (PCCT) using grating interferometry provides enhanced soft-tissue contrast. The possibility to use standard polychromatic laboratory sources enables an implementation into a clinical setting. Thus, PCCT has gained significant attention in recent years. However, phase-contrast CT scans still require significantly increased measurement times in comparison ...

Non Destructive Failure Analysis Technique With a Laboratory Based 3D X-ray Nanotomography System

X-ray computed tomography (CT) is a powerful nondestructive 3D imaging technique, which enables the visualization of the three dimensional internal structure of opaque materials such as semiconductor devices. Reports of high resolution CT research on life science, materials and semiconductor has mainly been confined to synchrotron radiation centers. This severely limits the availability and acc...

Toward clinical X-ray phase-contrast CT: demonstration of enhanced soft-tissue contrast in human specimen.

OBJECTIVES X-ray computed tomography (CT) using phase contrast can provide images with greatly enhanced soft-tissue contrast in comparison to conventional attenuation-based CT. We report on the first scan of a human specimen recorded with a phase-contrast CT system based on an x-ray grating interferometer and a conventional x-ray tube source. Feasibility and potential applications of preclinica...
